Chapter 2: Memories and Nightmares
First day on the force in Lupineville wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be. "CHARLES, REPORT TO MY DESK IMMEDIATELY!" Sergeant Baker screamed all the way across the hall to wake me up from my deepful slumber. I woke up immediately and stood up from the comfy sofa (who knew there would be a sofa..a comfy sofa in the police department) and walked over to his desk. "Officer Charles reporting in sir. What do you need me to do?" I asked. He asked me to patrol the backalley in downtown. Said he got reports of some smuggling activity going on there. He called out Darwin to accompany me during the patrol.
Interesting. A patrol mission on my first day. I brought my M4 along and left it on the backseat while my Mk23 holstered on my belt. "So, first day on the job eh?" Darwin said. Between the radio chatter from the police reports and the loud engine noise of the police car that I was driving, I barely knew Darwin spoke. "Yeah, kinda nervous" is all I replied.
When we arrived at the destination that the Sarge told us, I shifted the gearshift to the Parking position and unbuckled my seatbelt. Darwin did the same and we both got out. I took my M4 out of the backseat just incase and we both patrolled around the backalley. Not far from where I parked the car I could see some kind of activities going on so we both approached cautiously. The reports were right, it WAS a smuggling place of some sort. We could see weapons and ammunition in crates and also some drugs too. Suddenly the door next to us opened and we saw about 5 thugs with Ak47's coming out.
I ran towards a corner for cover behind a wall while Darwin took cover behind some crates. Not good. The situation got out of hand quickly. Bullets whizzed past me and some struck on the wall that I took cover behind. "Darwin! Get behind me!" I shouted but he could'nt hear me cause of the loud gunshots from each side. I unloaded a few shots and hit one of the thugs. One of the bullet found its way and made a hole right on the thug's forehead. The bullet went throught his skull and struck his brain while blood pooled out of his forehead. It was a straight headshot! The recoil from the shots vibrated through the gun and the stock of my M4 struck my shoulder with a strong force. I was still new to using the M4 and the recoil was quite strong. Add to the fact that my M4 just jammed, I didn't have time to fix it so I switched over to my Mk23 handgun.
The other 4 thugs kept laying down suppresive fire so I couldn't really peek out of the corner or one of the bullets might home in on me and that won't be something that I'd like to experience.
Instead of peeking out of the corner to shoot, I just stuck out my hand over the corner of the wall and made blind shots without aiming. Darwin screamed "A little bit over to your left!" So I adjusted my shots a bit and hit 2 more thugs. The other 2 thugs just ran out of ammo so they took their time to reload. This was my chance. I rolled out of cover and aimed at each of them. 2 shots were all I needed for 2 headshots and that's exactly what I did. It was so intense I didn't really know what was going on. Bullets flying everywhere. Fragments of the bullets and concrete from the walls mixing with each other and also showered the place. The whole alley was filled with smoke and dust right after the fierce shootout had ended. When the area started clearing, only then did I realise that Darwin was shot too. I ran over to him and examined where he was shot. I was shocked. He was shot from the back and only I was behind him. I examined the bullet wound. It wasn't a deep wound but it was fatal. The bullets from the Ak47's couldn't have done this..It must've been from me...I might've accidentally shot him while I was blind firing. Damnit! This wasn't supposed to happen! Especially on my first day on the force...
..That was 2 years ago.
Such an incident won't fade away anytime soon. After the incident, I quit my job and left Lupineville behind me and came over to this mysterious town called Arachno. Such a weird name for a town dont'cha think? I didn't really mind the town's name but what really made me feel uneasy was the atmosphere. It felt very quiet and eerie all the time but heck if the rent for an apartment room was only 50 bucks a month, you'd be damn crazy not to take it when its really expensive everywhere else.
Here I am now under the pouring rain outside the hotel that I just exited. My brand new expensive shirt now wet. I squinted my eyes and saw a taxi coming closer so I waved my arms hoping that the taxi driver would be able to see me. Lucky for me.. he did. So I opened the taxi door and went in. "Silveo Apartment please"
Silveo Apartment..such a luxurious name for a cheap and run down apartment. It was about 20 minutes by taxi from the hotel. I took out my handgun and stared for awhile. It was the same handgun that I used 2 years ago that killed my own partner. A friendly fire. It was an Mk23 handgun. Semi-automatic. 12 rounds per mag. Equipped with a laser aiming module and suppressor. Made by H&K. Each of the .45 ACP rounds have considerable stopping power. It's a reliable handgun that I will cherish. I wonder why I only had 10 rounds just now. I decided to reload the handgun just incase so I slammed in a fresh new magazine that I took out from my belt.
10 minutes after leaving the hotel, I suddenly heard a loud BANG! and the taxi suddenly started slowing down. At first I thought someone had just fired a gun. Turned out it was a puncture. First my informer is killed. Then it rains heavily and now a punctured tire. Could this night get any worse? As a matter of fact..it just did..
I saw at least 4 figures in the distance although it was hard to distinguish. And then I heard the growling noise that I heard from the hotel. Shit, 4 more of those mutated dogs?! The taxi driver told me "They call em Devil's Cerberus. Nasty lil devils" The taxi driver turned around and smiled at me "Hi, Im Leslie" I didn't realise the taxi driver was a woman till now.. A flat tire, heavy rain, 4 Devil's Cerberus waiting to eat me up. Great..Just great..
To be continued..
